Children and communities living with trauma need more than words. They need safe spaces to express, create, and be heard. Healing begins when stories are told, and we help young people rewrite theirs with purpose.

Precious "Billie" King, Founder
Known across the industry as Billie, Precious King is a Los Angeles playwright, director, and producer who has built her career on the power of story. She founded Program Rewrite to give young people impacted by trauma a script, a stage, and the chance to be heard.
Billie leads R.A.W. Theater Group, our performance ensemble for socially conscious work. Her directing credits include the festival-winning short film Red Barn, the web series The Woman Who Would Not Starve, and the stage productions Billie the Little General and Road to Freedom. She holds a certificate in Directing Actors for Screen from UCLA Extension and is a published author.
Billie also served as communications director for Turning Point, helping bring Christmas to kids and families in Crenshaw through the Winter Spectacular Toy Drive at the Crenshaw Family YMCA. Showing up for kids has always been at the heart of this work.

We don't just teach theater or writing. We create healing environments, and four commitments shape every session.
Our facilitators are trained to understand how trauma affects the brain, body, and behavior. We gently rebuild trust, regulation, and expression through creativity and connection.
Every child's story matters. Our programs honor the cultural, racial, and social backgrounds of the youth we serve.
Our workshops are opt-in. We never pressure kids to share their trauma stories or take on roles they are uncomfortable with.
When a child feels safe, they can imagine, play, and heal. We work to make every child feel seen, respected, and cared for.
From first workshops to full productions, each program meets young people where they are.
For kids
A safe, creative space for children impacted by trauma. Through role-play, movement, and performance, children learn to express emotion, build confidence, and reclaim their voice.
For teens
A screenwriting and storytelling lab where teens write original plays and short films based on real-life experiences, ending in staged readings or digital productions.
For youth and community
A community healing space where participants use spoken word, journaling, and guided dialogue to unpack personal stories. Trained facilitators lead every session.

Our performance ensemble and outreach branch, staging socially conscious work from street theater to full stage plays. Every performance opens dialogue and advocacy around pressing social issues.
For youth aging out of foster care or returning from incarceration
A mentorship program that uses creative expression, performance training, and life-skills workshops to build self-efficacy and independence.
Our productions cast young performers alongside professional artists. In rehearsal they learn to read a script, take direction, and work as an ensemble, the same way any working actor does. It is real training on a real stage, and it shows what the arts can offer young people: a way to express themselves, a craft to build, and for some, a career.

This holiday season, Program Rewrite presents a gift for 300 children and families. We are dedicating our Sunday, November 22 performance of ON and ON - Dancical at 3:30 PM as the Healing Seats Matinee, with every seat filled by the children and families we serve.
Many of these young people are in foster care, living in shelters, grieving a parent, growing up around violence, or missing a parent who is incarcerated. The holidays can be the hardest time of year for them, and we want their memories of this season to be joyful ones. For many, it will be their first time in a theater seat.
It takes 20 Healing Seats Sponsors to fill the house. Each $825 sponsorship covers 15 seats. Want to do more? Underwrite the entire matinee for $16,500, or split it with two other donors at $5,500 each, using the Any amount option below.

A dance-forward musical brought to life by professional artists and talented young performers, on stage at Barnsdall Theater, November 21 and 22, 2026.
Our young performers are working artists in the production. They are on that stage so the children in the audience can see someone who looks like them, and imagine themselves up there too.
